We received this invitation by email:
“ENDE GELÄNDE in August was the biggest civil disobedience action of the climate movement. 1,500 people occupied the coal mine Garzweiler. Many participated for the first time to such an action. Despite massive violence and threat of repression from police and RWE, we could not be stopped and we halted the excavators. In addition, ENDE GELÄNDE brought the conflict between climate protection and coal mining back into the national media. For many, this was a challenging but also encouraging experience that leaves you wanting more!
It’s about the whole
It is clear that a one-time action only can set an example. At the same time in the run-up to the international climate negotiations in Paris again the question of the usefulness of the summit protests arises. We believe: Modeled after the anti-nuclear movement, we can become a movement that opposes the profits of fossil industry and energy companies with our diversity, determination and multiplicity. We have to be the permanent factor that spoils the consolidated balance sheets of companies such as RWE and Vattenfall.
And this is about far more than just the immediate coal exit. The basic issue is a growth-based capitalism, which does not work without the destruction of our livelihoods. And it is about the social distribution question, if people get their power disconnected here, or if in the Global South people lose their livelihoods even though they are not responsible for climate change. To us, as climate change movement, it is about defending the possibility of a good life for all.
On November 7 and 8, we want to gather with as many of you to an action conference in Leipzig. Shortly before the UN climate talks in Paris we want to plan our future resistance. Are many of us still go at short notice to the protests in Paris? What do we think of the idea to block the world’s largest sources of CO2 in April? Is there a new ENDE GELÄNDE next year? What happens next to the meshing of degrowth debate and action perspectives? And what will we do locally?
Who is invited?
Just like we took common decisions in the action, we want to discuss on the future with all of you, as a movement. Everyone should have a say about what happens next. Whether you are organized in environmental organizations / NGOs, leftist groups and grass-roots initiatives or you do not have a fixed group – you are welcome. In addition to larger debates and longer-term prospects, we want it to work well in small groups on specific implementations. Come all of you, even if you do not have any experience so far in helping to create protests.
Action conference concretely
The conference will take place on 7th / 8th November in Leipzig. On 6 November, there will likely take place a larger, controversial event concerning the climate summit in Paris, so it’s worth it to arrive as early as Friday. On Saturday we start at 10 clock and on Sunday we want to finish at 13.30. Board is paid by donation. Nobody has to stay away from the conference for lack of funds!
