A friend who has accompanied us as a journalist for a long time in the forest, fell today from a suspension bridge over 20 meters high in Beechtown and died. At that time police and RWE tried to evict the tree house village. The SEK was in the process of arresting an activist near the suspension bridge. Our friend was apparently on the way there when he fell.
We are deeply shaken. All our thoughts and desires are with him. Our compassion goes to all the relatives, friends and people who feel concerned.
We urge the police and RWE to leave the forest immediately and stop this dangerous operation. No further lives may be endangered.
What is needed now is a moment of rest.
Even if this is difficult for you at the moment, just as it is difficult for us to give such a factual hint: We recommend, in order to protect all activists, do not give any statements, nor even make any testimonies at the police. The accident must and will be reappraised, but the police are not the place to do that. Their interest is to blame activists.
Update March 16th: Yesterday’s trial of Hambi4 has been even less transparent than usual, with defense being very limited in access to “evidence”. The UP2 (prison and correspondence name: Foot) who for last 2 months has been kept in isolation from other prisoners has been kept in prison while others have been released. Keeping one person, or a group on the same charges while releasing others is a classic repression tactic, let’s respond then with more unity and solidarity and unity by focusing prison support and letter writing on supporting Foot. One is too many! Over 30 people blocked the courtroom and police transport vans yesterday demanding to be able to talk to UP2 before being taken to jail and only unblocked when it was agreed to.
We wish the “unknown person 2” all the best and hope to see them soon in freedom and in the #HambacherForst again. more…
Against the airport
and its world!
The French government has abandoned the construction of the disputed major airport near Nantes, which had been under discussion for 50 years. The Prime Minister said that if there was such a strong opposition in a region, that literally divided the local population in half, such a project could not be carried out without confrontation (taz).
In other words, farmers, militants and environmentalists have prevented the project. They transformed a “differed development zone” (ZAD = Zone d’Aménagement Différé) to a zone to defend (Zone à défendre) and the people who had settled on the 1600 ha site, call themselves Zadistes.
Our congratulations to all, who made this possible.
The Prime Minister still said something else: “Anyone who is currently illegally occupying land in Notre-Dame-des-Landes must vacate it by spring at the latest.” It may be that the Zadistes will wait to see if this decision really will be implemented. If so, then it might be that more French will be spoken soon on the edge of the Hambach hole.

Communiqué commun du mouvement anti-aéroport, suite à la décision du gouvernement
Common communiqué of the anti-airport movement, after the decision of the government. Translation not yet available. Come back soon!
Let’s put it undauntedly: we want a change, a real change, a change in the structures. This system is no longer acceptable; the campesinos can not stand it, the workers can not stand it, the communities can not stand it, the peoples can not stand it… Nor does the earth, “our sister, Mother Earth”, as St. Francis said.
Pope Francis at the World Meeting of Social Movements in Bolivia in 2015.
In the background: the “Cathedral of Immerath”, on the last day of its existence?
Before that, the demolishing machine with the extra long arm of the company Herzog is already waiting. In front of it, the fence that is supposed to keep unauthorized persons away from the “construction” place. With a quote from the boss of the organization that once was the owner of this building. We would like to hear many of that radical statements from him. But maybe there is too much disagreement in the church?
In front of that fence, Christian women who are very much in agreement with this statement, Catholic and Protestant, who organized this political prayer.
There were about 300 people.
The words of a child were also read out about this demolition: “Hopefully the excavator will not start!”
At the end someone said: “Let’s not forget that without the people in the tree houses, the Hambach Forest would not exist anymore!” Big applause.
Spontaneously, one of these people said: “Please do not believe the horror tales about us. Come and visit us!”
Videos of the day before, January 6th:
Today is the last day on which BUND and NRWE can adopt a position on the settlement proposal (yes or no). Meanwhile they did so. According to Andreas Pinkwart (FDP), the NRW Minister of Economic Affairs, this winter there will be no more deforestation in the rest of the once large Bürgewald.
Sure, we’re happy. We rejoice for the bats and dormice, for the middle-spotted woodpeckers to whom they owe their homes, for the pedunculate oaks, the hornbeam, the lily-of-the-valley and all living beings in and around the forest. Also with the humans who – with their persistence in the forest, in the courtrooms, in citizens’ initiatives, in guided nature tours, in the procurement of building materials and food, in lectures throughout Europe, writing, filming, translating, collecting signatures and so many other things – made possible the current interim result.
