A new group called Climate Defender has stopped by the Meadow and went into the Forest today after going to Garzweiler and Erkelanz. There was a meal prepared at the edge of the Meadow in the Forest. This time was spent talking about the barricades, reality of forest occupation and an invitation was extended to upcoming events. DeutcheWelle was also present interviewing some of the activist.
Hambacher Forest is on the frontline of deforestation and climate justice resistance and visits such as this can be arranged for groups from schools, ecological and political groups and initiatives at almost any date. Just write ahead of time to our contact email: hambacherforst at riseup.net
As RWE continues being the single largest CO2 emitter in Europe, the whole Planet is entering uncharted territory with 2016 being the hottest global average temperture measurements stretching back to 1880, with the trend continuing into 2017. Latest research published by World Metereological Association indicates that the world was last this warm about 115,000 years ago, and that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels this high have not experienced for 4m years.
Quoted by The Guardian in the above article Prof Sir Robert Watson, climate scientist at the UK’s University of East Anglia and former head of the UN’s climate science panel said: “Our children and grandchildren will look back on the climate deniers and ask how they could have sacrificed the planet for the sake of cheap fossil fuel energy, when the cost of inaction exceeds the cost of a transition to a low-carbon economy.” This statement referred only to the pro fossil industry propagandists, those actively polluting the planet and irreversibly crashing its climate who work in the RWE offices and mines, and assist them from their positions in CDU, Green Party, Judicial and Law Enforcement system should and will be judged much more harshly by history. Also the Guardian has deinvested in fossil fuels and Watson might has been active in publicizing the planetary dynamic of climate disruption yet both are still advocating green capitalist solution with same levels of consumption and tend not to focus on degrowth or systemic faults of capitalism itself that have gotten Earth and the present day Western Industrial civilization into this predicament while the time is rapidly running out and the Runaway Effect climate chaos bomb keeps ticking away….
Time to pick up your laptop, paint, monkey wrench or whatever else you have in your tool-box and go into action in resisting corporate climate chaos.

The trial concerning the eviction of a compost toilet at Skillshares in 2014 took place in Duren last Tuesday. It concerned locking on to pieces of machinery which slowed down for couple hours the advancing line of riot cops and a front loader heading to destroy the forest latrine of the Meadow Camp. There was a very good turn out with 50 supporters which was too many for the room, with people sitting on the floor. The atmosphere was very close knit with people cuddling. So much time has elapsed since these events that witnesses could not remember the events and some stated that the activists came from the right some saying that they came from the left, one recalling that the face and details of defendant could not be seen while the other said he definitively had red hair [the defendant was not masked during the action and has brown hair]. The persecutor was so unexperienced that the trial had to be periodically paused to call another persecutor to get advice on how to proceed. With interests of the State being so intertwined with that of RWE one could not help wonder who that other persecutor on the other end of the line might have been. The police could not also clearly answer how they identified the defendant and if the person in the courtroom was the same person but were only sure that they did arrest him. In the end no charges were filed but a sentence of 50 hours of community service was given anyway. The judge refused for these 50 hours to be served at the WAA or BUND fur Umwelt Naturschutz(German offshoot of Friends of the Earth) and instead ordered the time to be served at a Food Bank in Duren.
After the destruction of the compost toilet over two years ago more people have been using buckets which have become an object of fear on the part of the secus and toilets have been build high up in the trees.
Legal attempts continue to intimidate climate justice activists: RWE has been issuing letters requesting that individuals involved in the act of entering the Garzweiler mine in 2015, whose names and addresses have been recorded, agree in writing not to enter the mine again in exchange for charges to be dropped. Legal action is being taken by the anti-coal Climate Camp Alliance and supporters to prevent this legalistic arm-twisting.
This Sunday the walk in the Forest brought more than 130 people to the Hambacher Forest. After converging on the road to Buir and meeting each other and talking together for about 40 minutes with tea and coffee and info provided by Hambi Activists the group journeyed into the forest. The walk stopped at forest occupations of Oaktown and Gallien where Forest Defenders shared their experiences of living in the trees and the visitors brought numerous donations of food and supplies. Later food(followed by a loud applause for the cook/s) was provided in the forest at the edge of the meadow where photo exhibits were shown. Towards the end many new visitors witnessed for the first time the destruction of the cutting zone itself and saw the mine with its diggers. There were also two “contact” plain clothes police present on this community walk, who tried to ask activists about which part of the occupation they live in. No responses were given to these questions given the common experience of facing often violent and almost always large in number police presence in the forest. That is also what makes the monthly walk in the forest such a welcome break for many of the forest people as it allows one, for a change, to be surrounded by a large number of people who are not armed, aggressive and who do not blindly back the most ecologically destructive company in the region and world-wide.

Newly added (3.23):
This spring once again a Skillsharing Camp will take place on the meadow again.
The agreed on date is: April 10 to 17 . The Camp will be full of workshops, lectures, art and actions in and around the Hambacher Forst. We are confident that it will be as much visited, if not more,as the last time, and that after the hard winter it will bring new impetus into the resistance. So please spread the info! If you want to help with the orga or contribute to the program, please feel free to contact. We look forward to seeing you!
Flyers are available in the forest (we can send them by mail, simply write us a message) or print them yourself.
Sunday, 19.3.2017, 12 o’clock: 36. Waldspaziergang with Michael Zobel
13 March 2017
In general and dates
“Good day everybody,
Early spring in Hambacher Wald. The clearing season 2016/2017 is over, there is peace again. The forest has once again become considerably smaller. Nevertheless, the rest of this former forest of the Rhineland is still worth preserving and many people are working to save the remaining land.
This includes the monthly guided tours I have been offering for three years. Fabulous 7022 small and large people were present, last 1200 (!) Participants in the Red Line in February.
Now the March forest walk is on. Certainly again a bit quieter, certainly more nature guidance than demonstration. RWE is always trying to prevent the tours, but also roadblocks do not stop us from coming back and showing people what environmental destruction is happening in front of our doorstep.
Also next Sunday we will show again pictures, which are not to be seen otherwise, will start conversations, which otherwise do not take place. All are invited to take a pictures, form an opinion, ask questions.
I thank you for the support, sincerely,
Michael Zobel from Aachen
The 4 different security firms working for RWE around the mine have been attempting to keep people from looking into the mine and from taking photographs. In case of the media this constitutes a polite caution to return to the edge of the forest and not enter the deforested area or attempt to take photos of the mine. In case of the Hambacher Forest Activists entering the same area results in a mad chase with securities attemping to “bag” an activist. Cars and trucks are used to try to chase people down and pin in them in just like in the case of a forest defender getting hit by the suckurity vehicle, being injured and then arrested for assault during the previous cutting season.
This Sunday in the early afternoon several activists ventured to the vicinity of the mine. They were at approached at first by two secu trucks which were then joined by two more. As if this was an open season on environmental activists: the vehicles begun to rev up their engines loudly, drive madly around the activists and attempt to box them in with their 2-3 tons of steel. When this did not work, some of the secus got out of the trucks and begun to chase the activists on foot through the ankle deep mud, with both sides slipping, sliding, getting stuck and falling as the 4 trucks continued to drive at the activist and attempt to cut them off. During this madness two activists were maced and captured and are being detained, either for trespassing or for any additional stuff that the pigs decide to add on to keep them longer. One of the activists earlier in this cutting season was woken while sleeping in the forest by the RWE’s publicly funded, storm troopers by being beaten and kicked and then was arrested. We can only imagine that experiencing this continual level of physical state instigated violence must make this already shitty experience even more so. Our Solidarity and Support Go Out To Them!!!
You are not alone! We are with You!! FUCK RWE!!
To have some exchange between each other we want to gather in the afternoon of 19. march as former prisoners on meadow.
If we stay in one big group or if we split up into samller one we can decide there.
The idea was to find a nice comfortable place in the forest – if the weather is shit we can also find other places.
The meeting is not public – its just anounced here because we are not connected up to now.
RWE continuing Carbon emissions from their power plants and mines, the largest net CO2 source in Europe, and its out of season destruction of a natural carbon sink that the Hambacher Forest has been for millenia is all taking place despite a continuing temerature records being broken(9 all time temperature record-breaking years happening all in this century), unprecedented low arctic and now also antarctic ice-cover, despite catastrophic effect on the planet as reflected even by both IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) latest revised predictions that double the water-level rise during this century to be as high as 8 meters beyond present level. This will mean the obliteration of habitats world-over and destruction of coastal cities. Still these official studies are flawed in two most important aspects: for their CO2 emissions estimates they use the data which has in US and several other industrialist countries been provided by the industry itself which has been monitoring its own emissions, the actual emissions are in reality much higher. Second the future projections take into an account COP Summit’s non-binding agreements for future projected CO2 output which in most cases are not abided by and exceeded, which especially will be the case with climate deniers such as Trump in power. So the “worst case” scenario is in reality the new normal with the potential worst case scenarios being even more catastrophic as predicted by former Nasa scientist James Hansen, the originator of global warming warnings in the 80’s who has been predicting several meter ocean level rise for the last 10 years. Leading him to lock himself to the White House fence and get arrested even during the previous “Oh-yes-we-do-need-to-do-something” US administration.
