Spontaneus Demonstration Following Cologne Courts Pro-RWE Decission

The ongoing court case to stop RWE from cutting one of the last remntants of ancient Hambach Forest took place today in Cologne.  The decission was postponed from Monday to Friday to possibly reduce number of supporters showing up in court, resulting in the same number of about 40+ attending  the trial.  The expected biased pro-coal verdict was read out rather quickly empting a court of sad, some crying and many expecting that precise outcome and getting ready for another winter of repression and resistance. The BUND fur Natur which originated the case against the RWE was hit with the costs of the trial while in the hallway the company bigwigs basked in the lights of TV crews as their power plants pumped more mercury, CO2 and particulates into the atmosphere, poisoning, emptying and destroying communities and habitats.  In response to this not just injustice but a mockery of justice and pure capitalist spectacle a demonstration with many banners, signs and a mobile treehouse info-point has formed and walked to the Cologne Cathedral and Train Station, with chants calling for Climate Justice, Saving and Remaining of Hambacher Forest and Stopping of Coal.  When arriving at the traditional location for manifestation and actions on the steps in between the “Dome” and the trainstation, speaches of solidarity with the forest were made by supporters and call for resistance voiced by Hambi Folks.

After 5 years of occupation this is a difficult and at the same time mobilizing call for the Hambacher Forest Struggle.  Difficult as we are about to face another winter of deforestation, and the biggest lignate clima-killer hole in Europe getting yet larger at the expense of this priceless forest and now also being a home to over twenty treehouses and 5 Barrio occupations.  This is also a mobilizing moment as never before have there been so much attention at the climate struggle in the Rhineland coal mining region with many years of persistent resistance, with Climate Camp, Ende Galaende and decentralized actions against this planetary monstrosity of injustice and polution that RWE working in tandem with local state instutions symbolizes.  Mobilizing even more so now because of recent state imposed false and destructive solutions offered at COP23.  As the realization daunts that we are the last line of defense against a future of climate, food and ecological collapse, self-organized support groups have been forming in Bonn, Cologne and Achen. Preparing demonstrations, actions, info-points and support and resupply visits to The Forest.

Also even though the number of people in the Forest have swelled recently a constant call goes out for people to organize in affinity groups in your locations and  support by journeying to the Forest or through remote solidarity actions.  If your are in one of the surrounding towns and would like to be part of the solidarity group just send an email containing in the subject line town name and what type suport function would be possible for you to HambacherForst@nullRiseup.net

In Solidarity with all Anti-Post-Colonialist, Anti-Extractionist and Anti-Authoritarian Struggles World-Wide.

Bonner Strasse Cutting of 300 trees Blockaded

Trees were occupied and a harvester blockaded in Cologne slowing the felling of over 300 trees for “Light” Rail MegaProject.  The cutting of the trees and reduction of pedestrian space and additional traffic lines like usual in urban and non-urban habitats coincides with mass wave of redevelopment and ecosystem/community decimation.  The response has been local grass roots resistance from 300Baeume that kept the struggle going for 2 years now culminating with support of Hambacher Forest activists who occupied the trees for the past two days as local supporters locked on to trees and climbed onto the equipment beginning on Thursday. Next day Friday Oct. 20 more private security of the City Privatize Frenzy Corporation KVB appeared and put up fencing around the trees and supporters, the limited police on the scene begun to pull local supporters surrounding a harvester away when forest activists climbed on top resulting in a four hour wait for more forces of corporate repression including the technical police to arrive.  Altogether the street filled with police vans and units attacked and pushed people below away from the equimpent and proceeded to remove the now 6 activists who have been in the meantime joined on the roof of the harvesters by two older female supporters living in the neighboorhood.  The support and feedback from those on the ground was incredible with discussion about direct action methods still not being a distraction from the coffee, cookies and batteries that were being passed back and forth as the police lines thickened.

THANK YOU BONNER STRASSE GRASSROOTS!! from many others engaging in direct action protecting habitats from destruction and for a reminder that dinamic does not go unoposed and that many in the forests who are on the fronline are not alone in their sentiments and action.

Four people were taken to the Giza in Kalk, refused to give their identity and remained anonymous despite being surrounded by 8+ cops and physically forced to give fingerprints.  Reminder of importance of use of safety pins, badges and super glue to resist the dynamic of surveilance state and its repression.  All four were released in about 3 hours but not before 2 people were physically assaulted while being stripped searched and fully and partially naked. In one instance for a for verbal comments that was made to the female prison guards who added insults to the physical attack by making sexist comments afterwards and in second case for a piece of clothing flying off in an inapropriate direction.  Everybody is physically fine yet additional support and advice could be helpful(especially  when hundreds of riot cops will descend on the forest for the cutting season) from other collectives dealing with the emotional and psychological aftermath of repression and state violence.

Meanwhile some dates of our information and mobilization tour are fixed. Please share them with people living in the respective cities!

The Hambach Forest has been occupied for five years, but it is more threatened than ever. This winter, they want to clear important parts of the forest and many tree occupations are threatened by evacuation. But our resistance will be just as massive! With numerous actions and blockades the destruction has to be stopped and we want to bring some of them closer to you. We will briefly present the forest, explain our plans for the upcoming clearing season and show you how to become active. Afterwards there will be a small climbing training for those who are interested.
Here are the tour details: more…

Leith Hill, England: Forest Occupied

The Fort

A coalition of environmental activists and local residents has occupied a forest in Surrey South of London to block Europa Oil from cutting a hectare of protected Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is also part of the local Green Belt. They have built a massive fort-like structure on the planned location of the drilling site, surrounded by tree houses and platforms and are also maintaining a roadside camp. The support of many locals has been exceptional, with meals cooked by a different local family each evening being brought to the protest site. The camp occupation is run by a small group of mostly older activists, with the fort being a closed to the outsiders high security installation. More direct-action and eco-defense activists are welcomed to exchange their skills and keep the struggle against fossil fuels going at this beautiful and still natural location.

RWE Once Again Not Paying dividents this year.

divest
Deinvest Achen Group:

On Wednesday, February 22, 2017, it was announced that this will be the second year in a row when RWE, the nuclear and coal-mining group, will not be distributing dividends to its shareholders.

The City of Aachen holds a good 550,000 RWE shares. These “investments” are part of budgets and portfolios of many municipalities in the area who have all been adversely affected by RWE’s continuously falling stock prices and no dividend pay outs since 2016.
RWE operates all opencast mines and most coal-fired power stations in the Rhineland. The company has therefore been responsible for for #1 net CO2 emissions in Europe, deforestation of unique forests and the destruction of numerous towns and villages for decades. “If anyone is destroying the Rhineland and the world climate, then it is RWE,” commented Lea Heuser, spokeswoman for the Divest Aachen initiative. “This is by no means just an economic issue, but above all one of environmental policymaking and of global climate protection.”

Divest Aachen has been calling on the urban community for over a year to decide ethical-ecological investment criteria and to immediately dispose of all existing investments in fossil fuels. “We have to prevent RWE from continuing to burn enormous amounts of coal to prevent global warming above 1.5 ° C,” explains Heuser. “This can be done by financial pressure, that is, by pressure from shareholders”. By not divesting the city councils involved are torpedoing the Paris Climate Agreement by holding on to RWE stocks. In order to meet the 1.5 ° C limit, according to current studies the combustion of coal, oil and gas would have to be stopped immediately, and well over 80% of the resources would have to remain in the ground. Even an official study by the Enviromental Ministry strongly recommends that carbon dioxide emissions be reduced by at least 50% by 2030.

In the energy sector, there are numerous local and decentralized development potentials and investment opportunities in renewable energies. “The city community, like a whole series of municipalities, had long had the chance to get rid of this economic wooden leg and at the same time to do something for our already much-imperilled climate. Instead loyalty to a destructive and unprofitable industry is being maintained. Their spokespersons have maintained that the municipalities in the region try to use their status as a shareholder to have an influence on RWE. The Divest Initiative wonders what this influence should be and why nothing seems to be happening.

In the last few months, climate protection activists have achieved success in influencing not just Münster, Berlin and Stuttgart to withdrawing their capital from the fossil sector but also Bochum, Siegen and the district of Osnabrück have decided to sell their RWE shares. In some other municipalities a divestment of fossil energies is being discussed. According to a research by Greenpeace, there are more than 20 municipalities holding more than one million RWE shares. The current total of approximately 1.6 billion euros of public funds which are currently in RWE shares, would in the opinion of the climate activists be much better spent in the local renewable energy sector that generates on average 5 times more jobs than the fossil fuel industry without having its catastrophic ecological impact.

Translated with small changes from the Press release of the Divest Aachen initiative.

CALL FOR ANTI-REPRESSION RESPONSE

Such cases will only repeat themselves with greater regularity and intensity as RWE and other corporate barons carve out the Planet and local jurisdictions into their private domains and as the effect of their actions on the global climate and ecology is distracted by more and more militarized and violent police actions. Here an analogy of the struggle of Zapatistas comes to mind: In the 90s the Mexican State response to the Zapatistas Uprising was massacres of whole indigenous villages. In the Rhineland the forests are massacred outright, the people are moved away but the villages themselves are also destroyed by the bulldozers and wrecking balls. The carnage however of these actions is not just felt by local biodiversity but also already felt by millions affected by climate chaos world-wide and will take a heavy toll on future generations in the global north as well, presently shielded by their privilege.
