“State of the matter, 5 years after the delivery of the order by the building authority of the district Düren to vacate the meadow, on 12/24/2012:
- The excavator to remove the upper layers is still standing about 80 – 100 m away from the former alignment of the A4. Location: Ancient motorway A4 direction Düren, westernmost point!
- The former works road is given up and completely free, RWE probably resigned themselves to the loss of this road.
- Matthias Hartung, CEO of RWE Power AG, is “going to retire prematurely” this year.
- Peter Terium, CEO of the parent company of RWE Power AG and of RWE Innogy AG, is going to leave the RWE Group (became known 5 days ago).
- Matthias Hartung and Peter Terium should keep further damage away from the RWE Group. They will not be able to escape their possible responsibilities because of serious environmental crimes against the soil and groundwater, or because of the transfer of insolvency, just like the responsible politicians in North Rhine-Westphalia.
About the “jobs that depend on the Hambach opencast mine”
Not 60,000 jobs are endangered at the end of the open pit Hambach on 03/31/2018, but only less than about 800:
- Including the apprentices, only fewer than 800 people (estimated) are employed at the Niederaussem power plant.
- The employees of the Hambach open-pit mine (estimated, including the apprentices: approx. 700-900) will continue to be needed for years for the dismantling works of the Hambach mine and to restore the surface of the hole that will be left as required by law (BBergG).
This cutting season the people in the Forest were no longer forced to stay up in the treehouses listening to chainsaws and the dying sound of falling and crashing trees while riot cops, bulldozers and armored personel carriers controlled the ground. And as the courtcase and the appeal were going through, while once again the trees were falling in the forest, it was the incredible coalition of feminist, animal-rights, queer anarchist, autonomous, anti-autoritharian, grass-roots activists and individuals that came together to resist the cutting of the ancient Hambacher Forest and put their bodies in front of riot shields and chemical weapons. Hundreds of others came together in community support meetings all around the region and yet others joined in with info and banner actions.
THANKS!!!! to all of you this foto is dedicated….
Due to power and effectiveness of coalition actions ,that have become synonymous with Climate Camp, Ende Galende and now Hambacher Forest much effort and resources continue to be spent to deligitimize and divide. The ultimate reminder on the necessity of the continuation of this struggle and staying active. See You All in the Forest!
It has been revealed by Jürgen Döschner an investigative reporter from WDR in an expose posted online as an article and an audio report that local municipalities of Mönchengladbach, Erkelenz, Jüchen, Titz have been co-opted by a lobbying association linked to RWE that has forced those cities to enter into an agreement with the company to secretly notify RWE represetatives when any debates and/or decissions concerning this Climate Killer copany are about to take place. It can only be presumed that this would give the company time to activate its Revolving Door Option offering often seen in the region and elsewhere where fossil fuels industry is wrecking the planet chance to join the company after their term as a “representative” is over.
Just another alarm bell for those still walking around in a stuppor that the “expert” decission on whether Hambach Forest is a unique habitat that should be preserved(for this no expert is needed but just one look into any book on unique forests of europe to verify this well know fact) will be a positive one.
Another reminder to keep the support structures going and that the only effective response to capitalist world-view based on corruption and exploitation is resistance and solidarity.
Today’s walk in the Forest has attracted over 400 people reflecting a wave of popular support sweeping not just the region but all of Germany and from around the world. This is happening at the time when the rulling parties are no loger able or willing to hold an argument on exiting from coal and its effects on the climate but istead have become an extension of RWE special interests and are trying to redirect attention and justify large police actions to destroy the last of Hambi by talk of extremism and violence. All as an attempt to criminalize the whole climate justice movement employing such pesky tactics as road blockades and locking on to planet and climate destroying equiment. Many supporters realized that this is one of the last chances to see the world unique bionome of Hambacher Forest in its present shape if at all. They have expressed their gratitude by sharing home-baked cakes, lots of other food, warm clothing and other supplies with the unarmed “extremists” most of whom do not have firearms training both of which can not be said for the hundreds of armed cops that will arrive in Hambach to help RWE destroy the forest despite wide-spread opposition bringing a reality of climate unstability that in a logic so typical of disaster-capitalism is in turn used to justify further progressive militarization of police forces and higher levels of repression.
The walk went through two occupations of Gallien where people stoped by to chat with forest defenders and then through OakTown to the edge of the forest and standing on the wall separating the forest from the zone of destruction and the mine. There a human Red Line of banners and people holding hands, singing was formed while speaches others spoke on the topic of Hambacher Forest, Coal and Climate Justice.
Speciall Thank-You also to the oldest 93 year participant of the walk who has knitted warm mittens and hat as a special gift for the defeders of ancient Hambacher Forest: THANK YOU!!! VIELEN DANKE!!!
This week several bat experts from BUND (German Friends of the Earth) visited the forest, discussed and shared information on bat behaviour and their population pressure in the shrinking forest. The group that has evicted the bats and mice by blocking their lairs has refused to engage us in this discussion regardless of many requests and calls to discuss and explain their animal evictions in front of the harvesters by setting up a bogus claim that now there is no endangered bats in the forest about to be cut. This group is not only sponsored and paid by RWE but it was also discovered during this visit that their claims that they are affiliated and approved by BUND were misrepresentation and were untrue.
The walk with infra-red camera looked at and for evidence of plastic covered holes being reopened by animals, fluid and smell coming from the opening indicating that animals were closed in inside. As a result of all the above evidence being found across the forest as many closed openings as possible were re-opened.

Yesterday the forest was full of supporters and visitiors as 3 organized groups came to the forest: Radical Forest Walk, Meditation Walk and a BikeTour. Thank you to all who came and also brought supplies such as batteries, blankets and the homemade vegan cakes.
This is happening at the time when there is obvious attempts to errode the base of support taking place by engaging in obvious propaganda campaign to potray Hambi people as dangerous extremist. This narrative convieniently ignores that many in the forest just days ago were being pepper sprayed and injured by the cops to stop the profit-mad extremists from crashing the planet and its climate.
Defend Hambi or choose to fester and die in a Zambie Climate Chaos reality of extincion and foodcollapse!!! The choice is yours! And as all the supporters this sunday and during past week showed: you do not have to live in the forest to make that choice.
The security road has fallen into our hands. Secus are unable to take control and we have decided to build a winter beach on it. Directly next to the biggest artificial lake in Germany we are opening a beach club! A Beach Bar has been built and the sand is ready for you to feel the (not so blissful) heat of the coal mine.
Today (December 2nd) starting at 3pm we will throw a party with a (Molotov) cocktail bar, sound system, a No-Talent Talent Show and a band. Bring inflatable palm trees, plenty of drinks (don’t forget non-alcoholic ones too!) and your best dancing boots.
Spread the word. Let’s make this party unforgettable!
PS: Sunday (3rd of December) we will host a Noise Band also at the Beach Club. Bring more drinks and probably not as many inflatables.
You’re invited to stay in the forest afterwards!
See you at the Beach Club. Don’t miss out!
(In case some people don’t understand: Calling terrorists to people who try to protect the forest and the climate , adds insult to injury towards those affected by terrorist attacks in Pakistan or Paris)
During Monday and Tuesday over 10 acress of millenarian 12,000 year old Hambacher Forest has been cut. Going into that area is a sad, sureal and infuriating experience.
It is estimated that if the present rates of global deforestation continue(an area the size of Belgium disappearing anually) only about 10 percent of the global forest will remain by 2030. The estimates of carbon dumped into atmosphere from the deforested wood and humus biomass alone is about 17 percent of total global emissions.
When climate change is looked at as a business opportunity in a growing field of geo-engineering, false and non-tried solutions of carbon sequestration that are used as justification to continuing to dump CO2 into the atmosphere, it is the forests and trees that have been and remain the best and natural converters and sequesterers of carbon.
Obviously if their financial value is greater than ecological awareness, and foresight of local, state and judicial institutions their biodiversity remains at risk. The financial value of tons of climate, atmosphere and water-table destructive lignite under the forest floor only sways the scales of “justice” in the direction of the profit it brings to RWE not to the impact it is having and will continue to have on future generation. Even the global disaster it is bringin on is looked as a financial opportunity. In this context the outcome of the delayed legal decission is rather obvious so:
